A Weekend in San Antonio

Well, if you can remember back this far, BYX had a Date Auction fundraiser in mid-February.  David Durnil and I went on the auction block, selling "A Weekend in San Antonio".  Well, trying to coordinate four people's schedules is quite difficult, and the only time we could take this excellent trip was the Thursday before Easter, so that's exactly what we did.  Thursday afternoon about 3 o'clock, the four of us (Ian, David, Sunni, and Carole Ann) took off for San Antonio!

The drive to San Antonio was a lot longer than I remembered, but now that I think about it, I've never made that trip before.  I've driven to Austin a few times, but SA is not as close to Austin as I thought.  'Tis no matter...we had a blast on the road getting to know each other, and taking crazy photos.

This picture at left was taken while the car was moving at 70 miles an hour.  David is "driving" but yet it turned out as the best picture taken, in my opinion.

The first stop we made was in Hillsboro, at the J. Crew outlet, a favorite pit stop that is always made whenever David and I are on a trip back from the Austin/Waco area.  David needed to buy a swimsuit, which he did.

Some crazy photo angles that we tried on the drive:

Since I've made the I-35 trip with Rob a few times, I was able to point out all the landmarks along the freeway.  These landmarks include the Seventh Day Adventist Southwest Headquarters, the Five Star Inn, Ted Nugent Avenue, and my personal favorite, HEB Airport.  That's the HEB just north of Austin that looks like it should be the next airport terminal.  You know what I'm talking about.

We arrived at our hotel a little after 8:00.  Our digs:  the four-star Hyatt Regency in downtown San Antonio.  The river runs through the atrium, and all the shops and restaurants are within walking distance.  Upon reaching our destination, I placed a call to "Happy" Matt Turner and got some restaurant recommendations.  He had good things to say about two places:  Casa Rio and Rio Rio (remember, it's on the Riverwalk).  We had our Mexican food and strolled alongside the river for most of the night.

We also needed to visit the Alamo.  I am very well-versed in Texas history because my first year in school in Texas was seventh grade, the year of Texas history.  Sunni also knew a lot (she's from Brenham), but David and Carole Ann were not so knowledgeable, being from Virginia and Colorado, respectively.

David doesn't go very far without two things:  his guitar, and Pikachu.  Sunni and Carole Ann are both classically trained sopranos (that's almost correct) so it was very nice to hear their melodious voices.

After a good night's sleep (a long night's sleep), we set out to explore more of San Antonio.  David claims his biological clock wakes him up at 7:30, but I was the first one up Friday morning, and that was at 10.  Right, David, I think you hit the biological snooze.

We went back to the river for lunch, at Dick's Last Resort.  The waiters' shtick is that they're rude and abrupt to the customers.

Exchange:

Ian:  I'll have Dr Pepper.

Waiter:  Okay.

Sunni:  I'll have Coke.

David:  Me too.

Waiter:  Got it.

Carole Ann:  I'll have water.

Waiter:  Cheap ass.

The experience was so memorable, we had to get a photo.  He was one crazy guy.  I think I got on his good side because I ordered what he recommended, the blackened chicken caesar wrap.
