Road
Trip to Houston!
DATE: October 24-26
TCU played Houston on October 25. I'm setting records for the number of
games I attend this year (all home games + 2 road games thus far). I will
go out in style my senior year. Anyway, I drove down with a cast of characters,
both familiar and unfamiliar, that included Geoff, Hatter, Steve Witt,
and Austin. On Saturday, a carload of people appeared: Billy, Lindsey,
Matt Loo, Amanda, and Becky. Also in town were
Kalli and Happy Matt (more on this later), Eric
Anton and his girlfriend, and Nick Breaux, who was at a horse show
and not available.
It's always a good time to go see the Hatters in Katy. They are always
hospitable, and always reliable for good food, a good bed, and very friendly
cats. Friday, we did a very middle school activity by going to play laser
tag...oh yeah. Saturday we went to Geoff's house in Richmond and I was
excited to show everyone the photo of Geoff at 3 years old with his very
blonde hair, LaCoste polo, and HUGE glasses. It's so cute.
The game was crazy...62 points is very uncharacteristic for TCU. The game
only took FOUR HOURS to complete. For a comparison, Game 6 of the World
Series was over before the 4th quarter began. We know this because Happy
Matt had the foresight to bring a portable TV to the game. Thank goodness,
because I don't know what I would have done otherwise. When Posada grounded
out to end the game, I cheered pretty loud, but it came about the same
time as a Houston first down or something. I don't know, I kind of zoned
out of the football game. Matt got a little TOO superstitious, claiming
the TV was causing TCU to play poorly. Pssshhhh. Whatever! It's their
fault for scheduling a football game during baseball season.
Houston was cool...there are some more stories scattered throughout this
week's update.
Rare
Sighting of CODY DICK and TODD ALONSO in Houston
DATE: October 25
Cody Dick, 2001 grad of TCU and BYX, now lives in Houston working for
Bank of America. He loves the Frogs, and was of course at Saturday's game.
Scott, Geoff, and I talked to him at halftime about all the goings-on
here and there. He introduced us as "the next generation of BYX"
and I had to burst his bubble and say that even our time has passed and
there's a new next generation. He felt pretty old when I told him I graduate
in May. I, after all, was but a mere freshman when he finished his 5 years
at TCU (that includes 2 degrees) in 2001.
Todd Alonso is still in med school I think and is now married. He used
to be Cody's roommate when he was going to school in Houston. He
also graduated in 2001. Perhaps you've heard of Todd
Alonso's sister, and of course, Cody
Dick's website lives forever on the TCU server!!
Thad's
Birthday
DATE: October 23
Thad's birthday was this past Wednesday, but we celebrated on Thursday,
at Pop's Safari. The usual suspects attended - Derek, Jose, Bartel, Brandon,
Blake, Anton, Jay, Heath, and Haverly. Even Cici and Jane showed up! Cici
took some great photos for posterity's sake.
After Pop's (fine dinner, finer cigars, and finest port), we went downtown
to some bars. Dietz joined us at this point. We went to the Library and
the Flying Saucer, where Dietz tried a beer called "Purple Haze."
The reviews were poor. Congrats to Thad on a great birthday party. Pop
even bought some champagne for Thad.

bottom row: Jane, Jose, Cici)
Pop's
is decorated in African decor, and there's a hatrack of various hats.
Heath fashioned the pith helmet while Eric played Daniel Boone. Jane is
the resident mad hatter since the real Hatter wasn't in attendance.

Apparently "Happy" Matt Turner is now dating Kalli.
This happened behind my back, and no one gave me a heads-up for the Rumor
Mill. Hmmm...I can't be losing my touch as a "rumor" mill can
I? Well, I really don't have many details on this, except that Matt stayed
with Kalli's family this weekend, and it seems awfully early for him to
be meeting the parents...already.
VIEWS: Kalli is a real catch, complete with her love of baseball and cats.
Four stars!

DATE: sometime recently
John is back together with Cici. Apparently he
professed his love in front of a large crowd at his improv show on campus.
Apparently Cici doesn't know that pumpkins rot if you carve them too early,
because the one on the porch of Little Cockrell is rotting.

Thad's
Birthday
DATE: October 22
Thad's birthday is coming up next week. His actual birthday is the 22nd,
but the celebration is the 23rd. Come to Pop's Safari that evening for
the time of your life. Pop's is located at 2929 Morton Street. Take University
Drive north past the Lancaster stoplight (where Casa Manana is). Morton
St is on the right (there's no light, so keep your eyes open).
Halloween
Plans
DATE: October 31
I've had various experiences with Halloween in college. My first year,
Halloween was on a Tuesday (BYX night). Sophomore year, Colby girls came
and trick-or-treated in Clark Hall, which was great fun for Geoff and
I. Then last year, we handed out candy (Geoff scared the neighborhood
kids), and I went to dinner with the Antons. Eric Anton's dad is a major
player in the Halloween costume business (I'm serious) so October 31 is
a big-time party day for him. The whole company gets a day off. After
dinner, I went to a party dressed as Scott Hatter. It was a big hit; I
even fooled his girlfriend.
This
year, Halloween is on a Friday. BYX is throwing an all-campus party, and
I have a great costume idea. But before the party, I need to buy candy
and carve a pumpkin. Meredith, Amanda, and Jane are coming over to help
with the distribution of candy. Hopefully we get a lot of kids this year.
BYX
Victory
DATE: October 16
If you've been reading the Rumor Mill for some time now, you probably
think of me as a big procrastinator when it's time to get dates to formals.
The last 2 BYX formals, I got a date less than 24 hours before the event.
Well, not this time! Victory is over a week away and I think it's now
time to announce who my extra-special date is...none other than Miss Lauren
Englemann. You might remember her as a past Girl of the Week. I'm very
excited about bringing a hot out-of-town girl to stir up all sorts of
rumors. Lauren will be in Fort Worth for Victory on Thursday and some
homecoming stuff on Friday. She's never been to Fort Worth before, so
here are some plans I have in mind:
- a
tour of TCU campus - she wants a tour and who better than tour guide
extraordinaire Ian Voorn
- dinner
at the Reata - Fort Worth's finest restaurant, and plus I have yet to
use my employee discount
- dinner
at Joe T. Garcia's - so she can have the world's best margarita
- Homecoming
Parade (or Frats on Parade, as it kinda seems)
- Other
ideas?? There was a lot of buzz about Lauren when she was Girl of the
Week, so don't miss this chance to meet her!
Fall
Break
DATE: October 11-14
Fall Break is nearing, and there's all sorts of plans up in the air. We
here at TCU get Friday off to do whatever we want. Due to precedent set
freshman year, I simply can't stay in town. A breakdown of past fall breaks:
- Fall
2000. Geoff and I drove to Flower Mound, celebrated Hans' 50th birthday,
then flew to Austin so I could stay with Rob & Andrew in their Prather
dorm room, and Geoff could see his family, who drove from Houston.
- Fall
2001. After a turbulent fantasy baseball season in The Real League,
Scott and I drove to Austin, stayed at Dan's apartment, and held a fantasy
baseball summit where we discussed rules and regulations for next season.
- Fall
2002. Plans started falling apart at the last minute, so I drove with
Scott to Katy and stayed at his house. We watched the Texas-OU game,
hung out with his friends, and had a good time.
- Fall
2003. Rumor is that certain Austinites are coming north for Texas-OU
weekend. Originally my plan was to fly somewhere for an LCS game, but
they won't be set until Tuesday, not allowing me much time. Instead,
Ashley, Happy Matt, and I trying our luck gambling in Shreveport.
Fall
Break Plans - (Of Other People)
DATE:
October 11-14
-Cici is planning another campout weekend at her family's ranch in Mineral
Wells.
-Scott is still trying to get Texas-OU game tickets
-Jose is going home to Corpus for a wedding (boo)
-Rob & Andrew are probably staying in Austin, since Rob sold his Texas-OU
ticket for $500.
If
none of those plans sound good to you, oh well. You can always do what
the San Francisco Giants are doing, and GO HOME CRYING! Marlins all the
way!
Fall
Softball Intramural Tournament
DATE:
October 5
Eh, it's not pretty. After winning the first two games outright (against
Phi Kap and some dorm team) we were shut down by the intramural staff
team. The day was wet and rainy, not optimal playing conditions, but we
managed. Unfortunately for our last game, we were short two players -
Brandon Wood and rookie sensation Ray Fleischer. Things look good for
the spring, though.
ALSO...the BYX B team lost to the intramural staff team in the first round,
but put up a good fight.
Mohawks
By Anton
DATE:
October 2
Well, I better report on this, because who knows when Anton will update
his website with pictures. Thursday was HIZ victory, and the ladies lucky
enough to take Jose, Gabe, Blake, AJ, and Andy were graced with mohawked
dates! Yes, the MBA program at Odessa (Mullets By Anton) has expanded
its business into Mohawks By Anton. Sheena, who is Gabe's girlfriend,
wasn't too pleased with his new hairstyle. Blake kind of looks like a
skinhead, and AJ had to shave his for his Sunday morning church coffee-selling
job. But it was fun while it lasted. Mullets, mohawks, what's next? How
about rat tails?
Saturday
Night (a week ago)
DATE: September 27
TCU played Arizona on Saturday night. Happy Matt Turner ordered the game
on pay-per-view (for Amanda: paperview) and we watched it on his television
(for Amanda: telivision). Mike Dietz, Nick Breaux, and I decided to get
there nice and early, because we were going to watch a football game,
not impress people with our "fashionably late" status. Well,
as predicted, the place was crowded and it kind of turned into a social
event. At the end of the first half, Mike, Nick, Jose, and I went to On
the Border for food. Nick got to watch his LSU Tigers finish off Mississippi
State and we made it back for the third quarter. TCU won in OT.
And
on the other side of campus...

Geoff,
Meredith B, Meredith A (seated), and Kelly with Amanda and Erin in
the front with their backs to the camera |
Instead
of joining the men at Matt's apartment, Geoff, Matt Loo, Matt Miller,
and Kelly went to Waits Hall (where the girls live) and did ARTS AND CRAFTS?!?!
What? Is this the Geoff I used to know, who would watch football on Saturdays
from 10am to 6pm and THEN get dressed?? No! Is this the Matt Loo I know
who worships the Eagles, Phillies, and Royals?? No! Is this the Matt Miller
I know who runs his own Mavs website?? No! Is this the Kelly Achilles
I know?? Well, yes.
| The
Kelly we all know and love... |
and
Matt Miller, who "helped later" |

Props
to Matt Turner for ordering the game and letting us overrun his apartment.
No props for the she-men who went to Waits.

Which TCU Professors are the BEST TIPPERS??
DATE: October 26
I've parked a lot of cars that belong to TCU professors. Let's give a
rundown of their status as free-spender or penny-pincher. The scale goes

Valet News
DATE: October 20
I worked on a Monday night (tips were horrible). But one of the guests
whose car I valeted was none other than Dr. Jane MacKay of the e-business
department. I thought she knew who I was, but she never used my name or
inquired about it. Whatever...I probably should have said something, I
could have gotten a better tip. Dr. MacKay only tipped TWO DOLLARS! A
travesty.

"Rob
Was Here"
DATE:
October 26
Apparently Rob was here. I got back from Houston at 4, and left for work
at 4:30. I returned to Cockrell at 10ish, and a Pepsi can awaits me by
my computer monitor. A very Rob-like post it reads "Skippy: Rob was
here" in Rob-like font (all caps). The Pepsi can was empty. Dustin
knew nothing. I guess Ben was here and let Rob in, which worries me. Ben
has never met Rob, and I'm curious as to his thoughts. That is all.

DATE:
October 5
As per Andrew Norton's request, the Voorn
Project Forum is in business. Things have started slowly, but there's
plenty of references to the high school years, including a mention of
David Lange. There's very little TCU involvement, though...I'll have to
work on this.

Hans'
Birthday
DATE: October 13
My dad's birthday was on a Monday, the 13th. Evan was off school for the
day, so I drove to Hurst and met the family halfway for lunch. Hans did
have to work, though. The four Voorns present went to Abuelo's for some
fine Mexican food and sparkling conversation. My day at Traders' Village
was fruitful - I found some vintage vinyl that he can add to his collection
of 400+ records.
VIEWS: Hans is 53 now, but he still seems a lot younger than other dads
I know. No names mentioned...
