The Birthday Celebration of Kelly/Erin/Billy
DATE: November 23

(L) Kelly celebrates with Sarah, and (R) Erin washes up after her cake fight.

LOCATION: originally Cockrell, but moved to Little Cockrell
I was all set to host a birthday party in my house. Next thing you know, I get a call from Jason, fellow Reata valet driver. Apparently I forgot I have to work. Party plans scratched, it gets moved next door. I go to work, freeze to death, and return to find the party still swinging at 10. Billy had left, but Kelly and Erin were still there, as well as numerous other characters. A lot went on - a cake fight, talk of Lick-It-Stick-It, good food, and unfortunately video games. All in all, the party was a success, although a new DJ should be hired next time. Seriously - Mariah Carey, Rod Stewart, and Alanis Morissette are not the best options for a party.

I dressed in pink for the party, since it's Kelly's favorite color. He owns 6 pink shirts! Amanda noted how her pink cookies matched my shirt. Very coincidental. And everyone's eyes came out nice and red.

Monte Montgomery Concert
DATE: November 22
Monte Montgomery, everyone's favorite singer-songwriter-amazing acoustic guitarist came to Fort Worth Saturday night. Jane and I had been looking forward to this since September. We got there nice and early and got to be in the front row, dead center stage. They were the best spots in the house. Monte played a 3 hour set. During one song, he comes downstage in front of Jane. Monte says, "Hey, check this out," and proceeds to strum and pick literally inches from Jane's face. The concert was over way too soon, and I almost left with the set list when it was taken from me by some guy who might have been Monte's manager.
IN RELATED CONCERT NEWS Hans and his best friend Larry were torn between three shows this weekend. Mingo Fishtrap in Denton, Monte Montgomery at the Aardvark, or Delbert McClinton at Bass Hall. They chose Delbert, partly because Hans had never been to the Bass, and because he's seen the other two countless times. Jane was disappointed - she and Hans are old friends apparently.

John Anderson (v.2.0) Suspended from BYX
DATE: November 11
Due to excessive absences, John has been "suspended" (sounds worse than it actually is) from BYX for the remainder of the semester. He is free to rejoin in January. But he has another option...why not rush Pi Kapp? The old John Anderson did it. So John has decided to do that. Take a look at this photo - would the great Pi Kappa Phi really take this guy------->
as one of their "associates" ('pledge' or 'new member' is too derogatory)? I think so.

TCU is 10-1
DATE: November 20
The TCU football team traveled to Southern Miss last Thursday for a difficult conference road game. They lost, 40-28, but not before staging an amazing 22 point comeback after a lot of fans had written them off. The team made it an exciting 4th quarter, but alas, our BCS dreams are over. The BCS system sucks really.

TCU is 10-0
DATE: November 15
In my final home game as a TCU student, the team beat Cincinnati convincingly, 43-10. Good job, team. TCU is making a run for a BCS bowl, but they have a tough game on Thursday night, at Southern Miss. Ashley Menzies, my next-door neighbor, wrote a great article for the Skiff. He has received some negative mail from TCU naysayers (article). But of course, the bottom line is we're 10-0 and it's a great football year.

Andrew Haverly's Birthday Fire
DATE: November 16
I went to Odessa Sunday night for Andrew's birthday fire. The hot tub was on, but not in use when I came. It had all the marks of a good Odessa party, which include fun people, a fire, and Andrew without his shirt on. I'm also having a blast with my new digital camera, if you can't tell from the infuse of photos in this update.

Joint Birthday Party for Kelly, Erin, and Billy
DATE: November 23
Kelly, Erin, and Billy all share November 23 as their birthday. Kelly will be 21, and Erin and Billy will be 20. Erin has asked to host a birthday party on BYX Row next Sunday. Much like last winter's Valentine's Day Party, there will be multiple houses involved and plenty of good times. If the party sucks, it's not my fault, I'm not planning it, just providing the venue.

Halloween!

Mingo Fishtrap
DATE: October 30
I saw Mingo for the 7th time this past week. Once again, I tried my hardest to get others interested in their show. It really helps that FrogPages.com sponsors the Thursday night show at the Aardvark, so girls get in free. It helps the sales pitch, but yet, the same old gig wins girls over every week - the idea of sitting on a stool hoping someone will ask them to two-step at Billy Bob's.
This week, I convinced John Anderson to come with me to the show. He had a really good time and praised the band's showmanship. Carolyn also came, and she was VERY impressed with the band. They played for about an hour and 45 minutes. They closed with "Bitta Honey" and came out for an encore covering Tower of Power's "What is Hip." All in all, a great show, and I got really close to the stage too. As always, their jazzline opening is the best introduction any band has.

Life & Times of Ian

Ian's Spring Schedule
DATE: November 13 (registration day)
I have always had semesters with 5 days of class. The business school, or the business world for that matter, don't take Fridays off. Well, next spring my only business classes are on Tuesday and Thursday, plus my last RTVF class on Tue/Thu afternoons. It's a class all about Frank Sinatra. The labs are dance lessons baby. My e-business consultancy class is Tuesday nights, and all this equates to TWO days of class (12 hours). I may take tennis on Mon/Wed for fun but I haven't decided yet.

RUMOR: Movie Premiere in Fort Worth
DATE: December or January
The daughter of the owner of Reata is a movie producer in Los Angeles. Her most recent project is a movie starring Julia Roberts and Bruce Willis. Apparently her dad, Al Micallef, owner of the Reata is offering his restaurant as a spot for a premiere party, and Julia and Bruce will be in attendance. This is, of course, a rumor, but sounds pretty cool to me! Plus, I'll be the one parking their cars.

Norton's Sunday in San Antonio
DATE: November 23
Andrew Norton attends Trinity University in San Antonio. Here is a word-for-word account of his Sunday evening:

Mulberry Village (I assume this is his apt. complex) Update 11/23 - 5 gunshots heard across the street at the other complex. Upon looking out the window, Daren (Norton's roommate?) notices our neighbor and 5 other pleasant looking gentlemen running back across the street. Daren calls cops, cops put said neighbor in cuffs then let him go 10 minutes later. Cops drive to Jack-in-the-Box for new item caramel shake. We cook lasagna.

I Visit Austin
DATE: November 13-15
There were multiple reasons to go to Austin this time. I was able to make a trip down to San Marcos to visit Adrienne on the day before her birthday. Originally there were two concerts to go to, but one didn't happen, so I still made it to Mingo Fishtrap. They played at Maggie Mae's on Sixth for nearly four hours. Andrew stuck through most of it. He said, "They're a great band, but I don't know about 4 hours worth..." We cut out before the encore, which I'm sure was a "What Is Hip" cover.
Thursday night, I went to Midnight Rodeo with Andrew, Kristy, Lauren, Sheridan, Amy, and Abby (I think I got everyone). Andrew enticed Dan to come by telling him about Coors Original on tap, but Dan chose not to come. Midnight Rodeo is a mesh of Billy Bob's (two-stepping, live band) and Cowboys (dark lights, booty music, $5 cover). I had a good time, and discovered that Emily goes every week. Sure enough, she was there and we danced plenty, to a "Carry On" cover, of course.

Emily MEETS Pat Green (Again)
DATE: November 1
Emily works at GapKids in Barton Creek Mall. She has reported to me that on Saturday, Pat Green himself came into her store to shop. This makes perfect sense, since I believe Pat's wife is expecting a child in the coming months. I received no other details. Emily first met Pat at some sort of post-concert meet 'n greet this past summer. I wonder if he remembered her..

The Homefront

Adrienne's 19th Birthday

DATE: November 15
I visited Adrienne at college for the first time this past week. She attends the newly named "Texas State University at San Marcos" (formerly Southwest Texas State). I got to see her (small) dorm room, meet her roommate, and get a personal tour of the campus. It's definitely more hilly than the TCU campus. Adrienne has to hike up a long flight of stairs that resembles Hernia Hill at Worth Ranch. Perhaps this really is the "Hill Country."

I got to see Todd Rimling too. He's a sophomore at SWT. I took some pictures of Adrienne doing what she does best (talk on her cell phone) and one of the two of us.

Marcus Wins the Battle of the Axe
DATE: October 31
I forgot about this story. One of the BYX new members, Jeff, also attended Marcus High School. He went to the annual Marcus-Lewisville rivalry game, known as the "Battle of the Axe." It's such a popular game they have to play it at Texas Stadium. Lewisville usually dominates, but this year, Marcus won 52-7. It was their first win since 1997, my sophomore year in high school and the year we won the state 5A championship. Go Big Red!

Parents' Newest Newfangled Idea
DATE: November 1
I got a call from my parents on Saturday. They were calling from Tyler, Texas, which was the next stop after Canton First Monday Flea Market. They, of course, bought nothing at Canton, but then decided to drive onto Tyler and see the "sights." One of the first sentences I heard was "it's a nice place...maybe we should retire here." ALERT! Tyler?? Since when has this East Texas city become the hot spot for retirees? David Durnil's parents have moved there and now HANS wants to? What is that about? Hans of course went through the pros and cons with me: "it's only a 30 minute flight to DFW, and we'll have D2 thru status which will get us higher on the list." That's Hans...basing his retirement around his flight benefits. But by then he'll have guaranteed seats anyway...no more of this standby trash.
VIEWS: I should not be expected to stand such a boring retirement location! What happened to the college town idea, Dad?
