TCU Newswhat's REALLY happening on campus DATE: May 17 LOCATION: Arlington, Virginia David's brother Jamie throws a party he calls "The Wine and Dine" in their hometown of Arlington, Virginia. $20 cover for all you can eat and drink. He held it at the American Legion, which already had a liquor license, conveniently. David was a good boy and helped a lot of people home so they wouldn't drive while soused.
Hi, Mr. Durnil!! Great party last night.....thanks!! you
are such an awesome planner/host!! Will you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
tell David I said thank you SSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
much for not letting me drive last night!! I was literally
in my car backing out of the parking lot, and he stopped me and told me
to get in his/your car...what a sweetheart!!! tell him i said
thank you a thousand times!!
David left the party knowing that he wants to throw a similar bash in Fort Worth. The Voorn Project will keep you posted about Fort Worth Wine and Dine 2003.
Genna & Dustin's Wedding DATE: May 24 LOCATION: Carr Chapel and the Ashton Hotel I went to the wedding of Dustin and Genna on Saturday night. I had to sit with the couples section, friends of mine who are either (a) already married, (b) engaged to be married, (c) close to engaged to be married, or (d) Scott Hatter. It was an intimate gathering, and like all weddings, I have a great feeling of joy for those entering into such a union. Feelings of joy for me don't equate to tears, unlike everyone else in the room it seemed. Congrats to Dustin and Genna as they embark on their new life, and on their honeymoon (the destination was kept secret from Genna). NOTES: I caught the garter, baby!
The Pick-Up DATE: May 25 LOCATION: central Dallas Blake recently made a purchase on eBay...a hot tub. Part of the deal was that the auction winner had to remove the tub himself. So, Sunday morning, Blake, Andrew, Eric, and I headed over to Dallas to pick up the hot tub. The guy's name was Kevin, and he seemed pretty cool. Cool enough to bring us a case of Dos Equis, or so we thought. Turns out that's what he keeps the hot tub chemicals in. Well, we had to remove a wooden deck that he had built around the tub. After that, we had to pick it up and carry it out the back fence door to Eric's truck. It was quite a feat, since this hot tub weighed...I don't know...3-400 pounds? It wouldn't have been possible without the strength of the fruititas purchased from a street vendor. AT ODESSA: Eric had already reinforced the deck and removed one side of the deck's railing so we could easily move the hot tub. Next, he removed the fence and the four of us moved the tub from his truck to the deck, and voila! The Odessa Hot Tub was in place. Now, if only the water would heat above 97 degrees...
Geoff and Dietz in Rome DATES: May 18-31 Geoff and Dietz have been in Rome for a week now, with other TCU students and professors, most notably Dr. Jeff Roet of the Geography department (known as Dr. Jeff). They are having a great time. While away, Geoff put me in charge of updating his fantasy baseball teams. Last Thursday, Rob and I undertook a drastic project to get Geoff some pitching points. Well, what do you know, that same day, Geoff somehow accesses the web and discovers our plans. Oh well, Scott Linebrink got a win out of it. The Roman boys
Cockrell Summer Porch Party Series: Week One Report DATE: May 15 WHERE: BYX Row The first week was quite successful. Our goals were simple: have a place for people in Fort Worth to hang out on a weekly basis. Overall, we had a good crowd. The guys at the Cockrell House stayed true to the "porch party" concept by sitting, eating, drinking, and bantering on the actual porch. Next door, the Friends season finale seemed to be of utmost importance. I have to say, a lot of people showed up awfully late. Just so you know, the "in" thing to do is to show up on time. Being 45 minutes late is no longer fashionable. If you want a list of other trends I've started, go to the Opinions page.
John Anderson Turns 21 DATE: May 18 John Anderson (v.2.0, new & improved) has become legal as of today, May 18. Last night, he was so excited, he and several children went to 7-11 to purchase his first legal alcoholic beverage, Heineken in keg cans. He was cleared by the clerk, but since he was with underage people, he wasn't allowed to buy any beer. Kids can sure ruin your fun...instead, I treated him to his first drink.
Cockrell Summer Porch Party Series DATES: Every Thursday evening at 7 this summer WHERE: "BYX Row", also known as the Cockrell Houses, half a block from Fuzzy's Tacos south of campus Just because the school year is over doesn't mean the social scene is dying! Head on over to Cockrell for good times, good friends, and good food (food that you bring). We'll be grilling and sitting on the porches. It's casual, it's come-and-go, and no formal invitation is required. Tell your friends!
Scott Hatter - Now 21 DATE: May 3 LOCATION: Fort Worth Scott, the mad Hatter, has finally turned 21. It was a long two weeks that I had to spend being 21 without him, but we're good now. To celebrate, Bob & Donna came to town to see him, and there was a large group of guys to participate in the revelry, including myself, Geoff, Dietz, Tim, Ashley, John, Steve Witt, and Anton. After a barbecue dinner at the Dietz/Hatter apartment, we went downtown for some Four Day Weekend improv comedy. Then, mini-golf and a nightcap on the Odessa Poolhouse. It was a quality birthday, luckily Scott didn't have to spend it sweating about a telecom project like yours truly.
BYX Formal: Getting the Date DATE: May 1 I'm getting a reputation for waiting until the last minute to get a date to these things. I swear, that hasn't always been the case. For my freshman and sophomore years, I got a date in a timely manner. This year, however, it's been a little different. Recall December. Well, this time, I asked a perfect girl on Monday (three days notice). Courtney was very excited about going, but Tuesday she called and apologized profusely for canceling on me, due to a prior commitment she forgot about. I understood, but Matt Rav did not. He left a sarcasm-laden message at the Dollhouse for Courtney and her roommates. I hope Courtney knows Matt did not speak for me too... So once again, I was dateless. Thursday morning, I invited Jen over for a pancake breakfast on the porch. Like our other breakfast dates, things never start on time, if they even do at all. Jen had "class" on a day that is supposed to be purely for "studying" (like that ever happens anyway). She arrived at 10, we had muffins instead. So there, on the day of formal, eating breakfast in the sunny morning on the porch of Cockrell, I got my formal date.
BYX Formal - The Event DATE: May 1 Jose made reservations at the Italian Inn for himself, his date Erin, Jen, and me. Jose bought an oversized novelty rose to give to Erin. It was at least a foot in diameter, and Jose insisted Erin carry it everywhere. She got a lot of odd looks as we walked into the restaurant. The Italian Inn is a hole-in-the-wall type place with singing waiters and writing on the walls. We apparently got the "Jared and Jenn Salzman" booth, since these married friends of ours had their name ALL over the walls and benches. It was quite odd, really. All in all, formal was a good time, no complaints, and Jen was an excellent date. I probably should have just gone with her in the first place, but instead, I had to wait until the last possible minute.
Intramural Softball Champions! DATE: April 28 and April 29 Monday the 28th was our semifinal against Lambda Chi 3. We had already beat Lambda Chi 2 and Lambda Chi freshmen, and found out that Lambda Chi 1 was defeated by the Rough Riders (a Milton Daniel team, not fraternity affiliated). We beat LXA 3 by a fair margin Monday night and prepared for our championship game Tuesday evening. TUESDAY...the fans came out in droves to support the Sons of Thunder. We had every player present for the game. I decided to skip the last History of Film lab to come for the game, a fair trade and the right choice, I believe. We held a decent lead for most of the game, but the score was 9-8 as we, the visiting team, took the field in the bottom of the 9th inning. The first batter got a hit, then Dietz encountered some turbulence and walked the next two batters. Bases loaded, no outs, down by one run. The next batter hit a sharp grounder to third. Mike Moore steps on the bag and throws home to me, waiting at the plate. The throw is perfect, and the runner's nowhere close. I throw my glove down at the dish as he slides into it. Double play. Now, there's runners on first and second with two outs. The pressure subsides, and then the final batter flies out to centerfield. Game over, BYX is intramural softball champions. Jose, first baseman, said "I've been waiting for this for four years." VIEWS: our entire lineup, mostly comprised of juniors, will be back next season to defend the title...
Other Intramural News DATE: April 29 Before our championship game, I went out to the intramural fields to watch the HIS team play for their championship. They've had it a bit easier, playing only one real game up to that point (most teams didn't have enough players and had to forfeit). Well, this final game had two teams ready to play, but only one left with the trophy...and that was the HIS team. Congrats to them on a championship, and to Heather and Allisa for anchoring a solid team.
Voorn Project Digital Camera DATE: April 28 The camera is down...I don't know why. I'm working on fixing this, but this has been causing a major headache. Pictures to resume as soon as possible. Life & Times of Ianand what a life it is. The Valet Job START DATE: May 23 LOCATION: Reata, downtown Fort Worth I began work as a valet driver at the Reata this weekend. Wow...what a great job. I get to be outside, wear shorts, work with great people, get discounts at a great restaurant, and most of all, drive a lot of nice cars. I've made a few theories in the three nights I've worked. First of all, not every car is a $50,000 Benz. But I would say 75% of the cars are newer than three years old. I drive a lot of brand new Suburbans, BMWs, Lexus SUVs, Benzes, and stuff like that. It's a great way to shop for a car I won't be able to afford for another 10 years. MONDAY NIGHT. I worked Memorial Day, which was very slow. However, my life changed when I got to drive this:
If you're not familiar with this vehicle, it is the Cayenne Turbo, the new SUV from Porsche. It retails around $80K I think. Anyway, a guy pulled up in a royal blue Cayenne tonight, and guess who got to park it. That's right, me. So if you want an opinion, you should buy this car. It is simply amazing. A 911 Carrera's engine in a larger body, with a beautiful interior.
Day at Traders' Village DATE: May 18 Rob and I set out for Traders' Village today for some hot deals. I really wasn't sure what I was looking for, but boy did I find it. After a long drought at thrift stores, I banked today. 9 shirts for 7 dollars total. I found a great old-school button down at a stand advertising "7 shirts for 5 dollars." I only wanted one, and the lady said it would be 2 dollars. That was a rip-off, I decided, so I continued to look until I found 7 to my liking. 71 cents each was better than 2 dollars. I also bought a pre-viewed DVD for 10 bucks. Rob, on the other hand, knew exactly what he was looking for. Rob is constantly adding to his collection of original Nintendo games. He left Traders today with 42 games, one SNES game, one Nintendo 64 game, and a complete Nintendo system. Rob, ever the shrewd businessman, had to trade in some previously purchased games to get a couple diamonds, such as Paperboy (goes for $5-10 on eBay).
Job Search DATES: May 14, 17, 20 Tim and I went downtown in search of a job as a valet driver last week. We applied at numerous locations, and later that week, I already had two interviews set up, whereas my search for an internship was going much slower. Wednesday, I interviewed with the Reata restaurant, and then Saturday, I interviewed with the Worthington Hotel. For awhile, it looked as if I'd get my second job before I got my first. But then, I received "the call" and finally got an interview set up for Tuesday night for an internship. By next week, I hope to be gainfully employed by two establishments...
Finals Week DATES: May 5-9 I have 6 finals this week...most ever. On Tuesday, telecom. Wednesday, film aesthetics and e-business development. Thursday, history of film and health. Friday, accounting. Finals week festivities started off well, with Jen and Camille visiting Cockrell dressed in tights, leotard, and cat ear headband, and a 70s-style red leisure suit, respectively. I can't wait for the rest of the week...
Fox and Hound Pub DATE: April 28 and April 30 LOCATION: Fox and Hound Pub, Bryant Irvin location David invited me to F&H to watch the Stars playoff series on Monday night. I'm not a hockey fan at all, but I went along to be social. Well, the Dodgers and Phillies just happened to be on ESPN Monday Night Baseball, so I watched that instead. What a relief. Wednesday, David invited me back. It was a larger crowd, including David, Wes, Anton, Mike Moore, Stu, and Boggie. Well, what do you know...the Dodgers are on again! This time, it's Fox Sports Southern California, and I discover a table full of Dodgers fans. Apparently they spend a lot of time at the Fox and Hound, since they have the west coast regional network. VIEWS: After making this discovery, I think I'll be spending a lot of time at the F&H this summer.
FM Connection
if you went to Marcus High School, this section's for you.
More Celebrity Visitors to Ivory Cats DATE: April 25 LOCATION: Ivory Cats Tavern on Sixth Street, Austin Andrew, who works at Ivory Cats, met the world celebrity Lou Diamond Phillips, a guest at Ivory Cats. Perhaps you remember Lou from his turn as Angel Guzman in Stand and Deliver, the only movie ever made about a math class, conveniently, about AP Calculus (which I took, but not with inner city Hispanics).
Some notable Angel lines: Investigator: Where did you get the test? Angel: The mailman. I strangled him, his body's decomposing in my locker.
* * * *
Angel: Hey, I'm the first one here! What's calcoolus?
Visit from Down South DATE: May 15 Andrew and Rob were so intrigued by the weekly Porch Party that they made the trip from Austin for it. There was plenty of fantasy baseball discussion that occurred. Jose and the exiled Dietz were present for a very interesting impromptu summit. In the end, all vetoes were forgotten, and everyone managed to have a good time. The night was capped off by a Mavs game party at Jose's apartment.
Blast from the Past DATE: May 1, afternoon I went into work for a few hours on Thursday. Kellen and Maya come back from lunch with Capri Sun drinks, except they're packaged in a metallic bottle, not a pouch & straw. "It's a promo," Kellen says. "They're giving drinks out for free." Well, I must partake in this, so I head out to the student center. Turns out the guy running the promotion is none other than Harout Yerganian, a guy I graduated with at Marcus in 2000. Harout and I had drama classes together. We took some time to catch up, and he seems to be doing all right, making money and still working on an acting career. I told him about TCU, and how I work in the admissions office. He says, "Do you want some cases of Capri Sun for the office?" I declined, but said I could use some at my house. "Sure," Harout says, and next thing I know, he's loading 6 cases of Capri Sun onto a dolly and loading it up to be taken to Cockrell. VIEWS: It was great to see Harout, and now Cockrell has enough juice drinks to last for quite some time. What a great day.
The Homefrontnews about Hans, Pam, Adrienne, or Evan Car Shopping with Hans DATE: May 26 LOCATION: CarMax and a Honda dealership Hans is bestowing upon me all his knowledge of buying cars. Today, we went to a couple places looking for a new ride for Ian. I had never really experienced the "fun" of buying a car from a dealership until we tried to today. Hans is a great negotiator too, by the way. We explored the option of leasing a car, but of course, we got typical lines like "let's test drive it" (I've driven enough Hondas to know what they drive like), "what kind of payment are you looking at", and "let me run these numbers by my manager". I couldn't help laughing when this salesman (couldn't have been more than 25) kept saying "...with approved credit", and finally Hans shot back with "My credit is fine, don't bring it up again." NOTES: Bottom line, I think I'm going to buy a used car from a third party, rather than a dealership. If you need something negotiated, call Hans Voorn, he's a three time world champion at this.
A Mother's Day Visit DATE: May 11 Hans, Pam, Adrienne, and Evan came to Fort Worth on Mother's Day for a lunch and (presumably) to see me. The five of us, plus Geoff, went to eat at Rio Mambo, since Adrienne still doesn't like Chinese food. I caught up on all the Voorn family news:
Hans' 25 year Party DATE: May 9 On Friday, Pam went to AMR HQtrs for Hans' 25th anniversary celebration. He's been with American Airlines for 25 years now, so he gets a certificate, a pin, a party, and free international flights. His "people", as he calls them, proceeded to roast him, Friars Club style. They wrote a song to the tune of Lennon's "Nowhere Man", except re-titled "Budget Man." Sounds funny to me. Hans told me that newly crowned CEO Gerard Arpey was not in attendance.
Evan Goes to the ER DATE: May 7 Wednesday, Evan was playing some sport and he came into contact with another boy and hurt his thumb. The official diagnosis was thumb dislocation. Pam took him to the ER, where he got a numbing shot, then the doctor relocated his thumb by pulling it and snapping it back into place. Sounds fishy to me. Evan now has a bandaged hand that resembles a claw.
Adrienne Chooses a College DATE: May 11 I learned that Adrienne has decided to attend Southwest Texas State University in the lovely San Marcos, Texas for the coming year. SWT, sounds good to me. That's all I got.
Adrienne's Graduation DATE: Monday June 2, evening Flower Mound High School's graduation ceremony is a MONDAY night. Seriously, who does that? Way to go LISD. Anyway, I've got to head home, probably with a present, to see Adrienne graduate. She still hasn't sent me a graduation announcement...
