Krispy Kreme Grand Opening!

Jose, Anton, Blake, Ian, Russ, Nathan

SOURCE:  Jose

DATE:  January 21, 5:30am

Jose calls around 11 on Monday evening, MLK Day.  Apparently the Fort Worth Krispy Kreme store is opening the following morning at 5:30.  His plan:  to wait in the parking lot all night and be first in line.  Geoff and I got there about 12:30am, and there was quite a party.  Several weaklings left early (8am classes, whatever) but I stayed the whole time and was 4th in line to get donuts!  Jose was first, and by doing so, he got free donuts for a year.  There were three TV crews there as well as two radio stations.  There were interviews and features on the morning news, so therefore, I'm now a Dallas television personality.  I forgot to bring my camera, but luckily Meredith was the resident photographer that night/morning.  Here are some images:

Here's the story about my trip to Austin...

City Streets:  WORST CLUB EVER

SOURCE:  the bouncer, and his stupid boss

DATE:  January 19

Meredith Alonso and Matt Looloian convince me to go to City Streets club in downtown Fort Worth for what was a "80s Dance Club" theme night.  Normally the club is 21 & up, but that night it was 18.  So, for the theme, Eric Anton & I wear old school track suits.  Mine was royal blue with the three-stripe Adidas logo running down the sleeves and legs.  I completed the getup with a beater and my classic K-Swiss tennis shoes.  Eric wore a blue velour-like warmup suit from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic team.  We were DEFINITELY eighties.  But the bouncer says "no sweatpants."  We tried to convince him that these were not sweatpants, but he still said no.  He even called his boss to see if he liked the idea.  No go.  Ben, Happy Matt, and Billy (at right, L-R) went on into the club, and Matt Loo drove Eric and I back to campus.  WORST CLUB EVER.  Plus, check out these massive X's the bouncer put on their hands, just to drive the "no alcohol for minors" rule into the ground.

The guys came by Cockrell afterward to say the club atmosphere was so-so, and the "80s dance music" was mainly remixes anyway.  Blah.  I was hoping to get my groove on to "Jessie's Girl" and "Tarzan Boy."  Man, I love Baltimora!  Meredith had a good time, I think.  The other selling point to going was a whole wing of Colby Hall girls were there.  Apparently Ben was the stud of the night and seemed to know EVERY girl that was there.

Sarah Cody

SOURCE: Sarah Cody

DATE:  break

Sarah came back from her Christmas break with news that startled the TCU community:  she's pregnant.  Kinda sketchy?  For Sarah, yes.  I certainly never would have expected this to happen.  What's worse, is she's only about 80% sure she knows who the father is.  Some rumors are going around that it was a careless accident, but also I heard it's a cry for help.  This seems odd, but hear me out.  Sarah may put on appearances that she's always happy and satisfied with her life, but perhaps something was missing.  I've known Sarah (no, not that known.  I am not a suspect.) for some time, and I think she's up to this challenge as a 19 year old college sophomore.  I'm pulling for you Sarah Cody!

The Liberty Bowl/New Year's Trip

SOURCE:  Anton

DATE:  December 30 - January 1

CAST OF CHARACTERS:  Ian, Anton, Jose, John Anderson, Meredith Baker, Erin, and Sunni

The seven of us left Fort Worth around 1:30 Monday afternoon in torrents of rain.  The rain didn't stop until we got to Little Rock.  The drive was relatively smooth, with Eric in the lead we took very few stops.  We had pretty nice digs at a Ramada in Memphis.  It was right next to a Starbucks, a psychic reader, and a fire station, full of firefighters that were TCU fans.  The game was great...we tailgated and grilled bratwurst in the back of Eric's truck.  It was a little drizzly during the game, but we forgot about it since the Horned Frogs won and we had Thunder Sticks to cheer them on.  Along the way we acquired some other Frogs, like Nick Breaux, Steve Witt, Happy Matt Turner, Ben Crenshaw, etc.  Happy Matt's parents were gracious enough to take us out to dinner at Blues City Cafe, a real Memphis barbecue.  It was a very worthwhile trip...can't wait to go back next year when the Frogs repeat as C-USA champs.  Then I'll be 21 too...

New Neighbors!

SOURCE:  Ashley, Tim, John

DATE:  January 2

Ashley, John, and Tim moved into 3124 Cockrell on January 2.  Dustin, Geoff, and I visited and officially welcomed them to what we now call "BYX Row."  They've got a nice big porch just like us, so we're going to have a block party barbecue or something.  Their house is real nice and it's a lot of fun having fraternity brothers as neighbors.  It's just like living in Clark again.

VIEWS:  John made up the name "Playhouse" for their house.  The other BYX houses are simply named after the street they're on, like Wabash House, Odessa House, or Cockrell House.  I suggested Big Cockrell and Little Cockrell, but John really didn't like that.  Thus, I continue to call their house Little Cockrell.

The house in the foreground is Geoff, Dustin, and I.  The yellow house next to it is John, Tim, and Ashley.

New Roommates on the Block

SOURCE:  undisclosed

DATE:  January 12

Emily Jones is moving back to Austin, leaving Beth Sims high and dry in the roommate department.  Rather than live in the room on her own, Beth has been paired with some random girl whom she has yet to meet.  Random roommates can be good (Geoff & Ian or James Carter & Drew Farr) or bad (Hatter & that Lance guy).  We'll pray that Beth's new roomie is pleasant to live with.

Rearrangement at #11 Kent Street

SOURCE:  Jen

DATE:  this past week

Kate has moved out of the "Maxi Pad" and so now Tara has her own bedroom.  However, she moved into Jen & Camille's old room, and Jen & Camille now live in the room formerly inhabited by Tara & Kate.

VIEWS:  Currently none of them are connected to their apartment network, so they're NEVER online.  I swear...I'm going through Jen withdrawals here.

New Year's Resolutions

SOURCE:  Ian, Sheena

DATE:  January 12

IAN'S RESOLUTION:  usually I've made resolutions like stop procrastinating, work harder at school, exercise more often, etc etc.  Those never work.  So this year, I've resolved to learn to play the piano.  I even got started early by checking out "Piano for Dummies" from the library.  I need some real lessons, but hopefully I can do that this summer.

JEN AND SARAH'S RESOLUTIONS:  Jen and Sarah have resolved to "be more girlie" and "lose weight."  This should be more interesting to observe.  The Voorn Project may be tracking progress if necessary.  Sarah has also resolved to wear t-shirts only 6 days a week, and not to church.  This should be interesting, considering she's now pregnant.  We'll track progress as well.

Challenged at RBI Baseball

SOURCE:  Rob

DATE:  January 24

I have been officially challenged to RBI Baseball when I arrive in Austin this coming weekend.  Rob is on this kick with the original 8-bit Nintendo system (or as Spenser calls it, the "antique" Nintendo).  His favorite game?  Well, check out his list at Lobsterbush for official stats.  But RBI Baseball is one of his faves.  It's about half of the MLB teams with rosters from the 1986 season.  Rob keeps a ledger on every game he plays.

Ian's MLK Day Off

SOURCE:  Martin Luther King Jr. and Congress, circa 1985.

DATE:  January 20

Thanks to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his civil rights movement, the whole nation is a lot happier and we get a day off to celebrate his memory.  I slept until 10 and watched a mini-marathon of MTV Cribs, followed by tuna sandwiches, a trip to the bank with Jen in the Miata.  It was 77 degrees, excellent top down weather.  After the trip, Geoff and I met some people in the Botanical Gardens for an outdoor study time/frisbee throwing.  That's Geoff getting some air in the photo at right.  Chipotle for dinner with Geoff and Happy Matt, then cell group leader meeting, visits to ye olde Clark Hall, and now here I am.

THE ALL NIGHTER!  Jose has this plan to camp out in the parking lot for the grand opening of the Fort Worth Krispy Kreme.  They open at 5:30 am, so it'll be a long night.  I'm considering... the weather is nice.

Crazy Spring Schedule!

For the first time ever, I'm taking more than 15 hours in a semester.  17.5 this spring.  Three eBusiness classes (Dreamweaver, Telecommunications, EBus Development), one accounting (Managerial), a health class (Drugs & the Consumer), and two RTVF classes (History of Film, TV-Film Aesthetics).  The kicker is, even though it's "only" 17.5 hours, I'm actually in class for 25 hours a week!  Two 3-hour night labs plus the Dreamweaver class is 1.5 hours, which means a 3 hour class for the first 8 weeks of the semester.  Hooray...and I've got to follow up last semester:  best semester GPA ever.

If You Live in Austin...

SOURCE:  me

DATE:  January 24-25

If you live in Austin (this includes Andrew, Rob, Joe, Dan, Lauren, Kristy, and others) I'm making a rather unnecessary trip to the state capital for some good times.  I didn't make it down at all last semester, so I feel obligated to make several trips.  Now that more people have cars and can easily pick up Ian at the airport, I'm more inclined to come.  So get ready Austin...Ian's coming.

Rob on the Radio

SOURCE:  Rob

DATE:  January 5

On 93.3 The Bone "Texas Rock that Rocks" they feature a Sunday night show called "Bonecrusher."  It's all about pro wrestling.  Last week Rob listened in and after repeated attempts to call, finally got in.  He was featured on air and asked several questions about the upcoming WWF tournament or something (I don't follow pro wrestling).  Just in case any listeners were unsure if that was really Rob, he inserted a few one-liners to affirm it truly was him, such as "weird wild stuff."

VIEWS:  He's already calling himself a Dallas radio personality, and hopes to make a regular appearance on the show as a random caller, much like Bad Elvis on the Beau Roberts morning show.

Ian and Rob - co-workers again

SOURCE:  Mikasa

DATE:  January 7

Last year, Mar Lewis hooked us up with a job doing inventory at Mikasa.  $8 an hour, paid in cash at the end of the night.  No paperwork, no taxes, nothing.  This year, of course Rob and I had no Christmas break jobs, so we went in search of a job there again.  We were successful, and worked for 13.5 hours from 1:45pm til 3:15 am Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning.  That was $104 in the bank.

VIEWS:  this year, we had inventory scanning guns to use, but after two years of experience, we are now "inventory specialists."

Trip to Austin

SOURCE:  Rob

DATE:  December 27 to December 29

Andrew's 21st birthday is the 28th, so Rob's idea is to drive to Austin and surprise him on his birthday.  Neither of us want to drive, so we enlist Joe, Rob's other roommate to take us down since he had to work anyway.  Andrew was definitely surprised.  On Saturday, we had a get-together that included Dan, his girlfriend, Johnson, Kristy, and her friend Amy.  Notable events:  the shortest game of Trivial Pursuit EVER (under an hour), a lot of Tony Hawk 4, and my favorite, Rob getting locked out of his room.  As he explained to me, "hey, I'm leaving, why leave my room unlocked?"  Sounded a little paranoid to me, but we're halfway to Austin when he realizes he left his key back in Flower Mound.  He slept on the couch Friday night and got the super to unlock it on Saturday morning.  To get home, we got Andrew to drive us, since he was going to see the Chuns anyway.

Geography Bee

SOURCE:  Adrienne

DATE:  last week sometime

This year, Evan was the outright winner of the Old Settlers Elementary School (Flower Mound) Geography Bee.  Awesome!  He was also a finalist last year, but not the overall winner.  Evan, 11, is a fifth grader there and is a world traveler as well as a geography whiz.  Congratulations to him!

BACKGROUND INFO:  Rewind 10 years, February 2003.  The place:  Baucom Elementary School, Apex, N.C.  The event:  School geography bee finals.  Ian, then just 10 years old and a fifth grader, wins the school competition.  It's a real family thing, this business of geography bees.  Way to go Voorn boys.

Evan's birthday

SOURCE:  me

Evan's 11th birthday was January 6.  As is Voorn custom, we went out to eat at the restaurant of his choosing (Anamia's Mexican food) and then opened presents.  This past Friday, he had several friend over for a sleepover.  My parents always love those, oh yeah.
