what's REALLY happening on campus

Fort Worth's (formerly) Best Keep Secret for Studying

DATE:  December 14

SOURCE:  Ian

It's just not like Ian to keep his great ideas to himself, so I have to let this out!  Saturday night, after dinner at Uno's and a sneak preview of Two Weeks Notice, we (Jen, Sheena, Allison, Geoff, and I) decided some more studying needed to happen, with finals just over a day away.  The normal places being closed (Starbucks, Fourstar Coffee, and the library) and no desire to order food (IHOP, Denny's, Old South) left us with few options.  I deduced that we needed a quiet, 24-hour establishment with no obligation to buy anything.  The solution:  a hotel lobby!  Perfect.  The smaller hotels along University (Fairfield, Ramada) were out - their lobbies weren't big enough for us to go undetected.  So we opted for the biggest and best hotel in Fort Worth:  the Renaissance Worthington.  After wandering the halls of the 3rd and 12th floors, Jen getting locked in a stairwell, and happening upon several parties, we decided the front lobby was the best place.

VIEWS:  It was noisy, but not overwhelming, and I would definitely go back for more.  My only fear is that this great idea will spread to the rest of campus and it'll be the new hot place to study.  You know me...I always like coming up with the "next big thing" but when it comes to studying, I like some peace.

BYX Formal Report

DATE:  December 11

SOURCE:  Ian

Yes, I took Genna Leal, and yes she's engaged, but it was still great fun.  David, Lisa, Genna, and I left for the Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas, but we got lost, and it took over an hour before we sat down.  We got to see some of Dallas - Dealey Plaza, Oak Lawn, and Highland Park - then had a great dinner amongst rock 'n roll memorabilia, then rolled up to formal around 10:45.  It was held at the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum.  The dance floor was set up next to the Knoxville DC-3, and we watched the slideshow in the theater made of first-class seats.  And I'm no longer an officer...sad days.

VIEWS:  Genna was a great date, even if she needs to read up on her rock 'n roll history.  Actually, she didn't confirm until 2pm that afternoon, so technically I officially had a date 5 hours before the start.  She was the long shot, at 20:1 odds.

The Memphis Plan

DATE:  December 30 - January 1

SOURCE:  Jose

TCU is in the Liberty Bowl this year on New Year's Eve, and I'm making the trek to Graceland to see this game.  We're traveling in Eric's truck, that being myself, Eric, Jose, and Thad.  I should fly - it would be cheaper and easier, but I think the others would be mad at me.  I hope that Memphis is a happenin' place for New Year's Eve.  I still won't be 21, sparkling cider will have to do.

John Anderson and his STUDLY ANTICS

DATE:  December 8

SOURCE:  John

John Anderson is taking a voice class at college, and he tells me his voice teacher is quite a looker.  She's 24, a recent graduate of TCU, and here's the kicker - she's married, but to a gay man.  What's that about, I don't know, all I know is John tells me she doesn't wear a wedding ring.  So John, never turning down the opportunity to be a stud, starts flirting with his teacher, writing things like "do you like me? check yes or no" on papers.  On Thursday, he told me that he was ready to pull the trigger and ask her on a date!  I wish I had his nerve...or his hot teachers.

VIEWS:  Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" keeps playing over and over in my head.  I told John he should have taken her to BYX formal, but he is not, unfortunately.

Formal Date?

DATE:  December 10, 7:30pm

SOURCE:  me

ODDS ON KAMINSKE:  3 to 1

ODDS ON BANDA:  4 to 1

ODDS ON CLEPPER:  6 to 1

ODDS ON LEAL:  20 to 1

Yes, it's the night before BYX formal, and Ian doesn't have a date.  Wow, he's even an officer with newly initiated pledges and he's still not cool enough to get a date!  I spent too long on the planning phase of the SDLC on a couple girls, and now it's caught up with me.  Formal is in about 24 hours.  I've put down some odds on who I'll end up taking:

JEN KAMINSKEShe's social, she's beautiful, and we're on the same wavelength.  Currently the frontrunner, but like all the options, she may already have other plans.

CAMILLE BANDAShe's new to the market, after being snatched up early, there was a change of plans, and suddenly, Camille is an option!  I could be really cool and take both Jen and Camille, but that's sort of weird, and not often done.

AMANDA CLEPPERShe's a good friend, unfortunately I haven't seen her in like three weeks.  A junior, Sigma Kappa, Amanda is the dark horse candidate.

GENNA LEAL.  My personal choice to take.  How cool would it be to take another man's fiancee to BYX formal?  Especially when said fiancee lives in Norman, Oklahoma.  I'm not moving in on anyone's territory, I just like to test new waters.  Chances are she'll say no however...

And then there's the list of potential dates that I barely missed, before they got a date:  Nicole Duvall, Ruth Morris, Lauren Englemann, Sheena Kenady, and Derek Johanson.  I have about 24 hours...we'll see what happens.

Formal Update!  Ian has asked his date, and that girl is.....Genna Leal!  Yes, the spunky senior who's also engaged to be married.  No fear, with the encouragement of her roommates Michelle and Allisa I asked and sure enough!  She's ecstatic about going.  Time of ask:  December 11, 12:30am.

Initiation

DATE:  December 9

SOURCE:  Ian

The Sons of Voorn new member class was initiated on Sunday evening.  Congratulations to them all, and trust me, daddy's feeling a little heartbreak now that his boys are all grown up.  No longer can I call them "new members" but they will forever be known as "Sons of Voorn".  Heck yeah.

HIGH POINTS OF THE EVENING:  Jose's mandate to have all 4 Hispanic guys in the front of the fraternity photo, the sweet-action new member shirts, John's random announcement about formal location at Cici's, and of course, the brotherhood.

Project Tenfold - The Saga Continues

DATE:  December 5

SOURCE:  Eric

It takes awhile to take revenge on girls when there's ten of them.  So we have to take things one girl at a time.  With Jen and Beth notched, we aimed for the hardest target:  Stacey.  She unwittingly left a large clue on her away message:  "I'm at Wal-Mart for a quick shop stop" or something like that.  Eric, Jose, and I jump into the red Z-71 and hit the road for Wal-Mart.  We find Stacey's car and park right next to it, awaiting her return.  Of course, she's not alone, Russ the boyfriend came along.  As Stacey rounds her car, I jump out, hood and toboggan on plus dark glasses and gloves, and grab her.  She screams, and I put my hand over her mouth.  Russ yells, "who's there?"  We have to kidnap him too, sucks to be in the wrong place at the right time.  After we get her, there was a good laugh over the whole situation, because she was truly scared at first.  We drove her around Fort Worth for awhile, and demanded her BYX Groupie sisters pay the ransom of our previously stolen Christmas decorations.  After some finagling, we got our stuff back, and Stacey was returned safely, but of course, while we called just Leanna, all 10 of the girls had to show up and "help out."  Their "helping" actually delayed Stacey's return, way to go girls.

VIEWS:  Stacey was pretty "excited" about the whole thing.  We did get her good in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Some leftover news from November:

Hey HIS Girls!

DATE:  November 26

SOURCE:  Allison Ross

Allison wants to make the asking process easier for HIS girls.  After all, isn't it my job to make things easier for girls?  Anyhow, since they're so unfamiliar with this asking process (let's see...I have been asked on instant messenger, on my dorm phone, on my cell phone, in that order) I am going to help you girls out.  The following is a list of eligible bachelors for HIS formal on December 12:

Here are some other guys that you could take

Ashley Menzies

Bear Duplisea

Nathan Winston

Robert Abdallah

Steve Witt

Matt Turner

Matt Ravanesi

Project Tenfold

DATE:  November 26

SOURCE:  Eric Anton

Tuesday was another wild night.  After the BYX meeting, Jose, Eric, and I went over to Waits Hall just to hang out.  Emily and Beth wouldn't let us in, and taunted us with their supposed "power".  We watched as they left the dorm and we then followed them around campus for awhile.  We got bored with this, and proceeded with Fold One (read about it at Eric's page).  Jen Kaminske's underwear drawer was emptied into bags and relocated to Eric's freezer.

Continuing with Tuesday's story...we later see Beth's Jeep at the Sherley House, home of more HIS girls.  We see that they are hiding inside, making it appear as if they're inside the house.  We park Jose's truck dangerously close behind the Jeep to block them in.  Then we walk off.  Later, they exited the Jeep, and after some stealth maneuvers around the house, we proceed to take apart the Jeep's roof, since Beth strangely left it unlocked.  That was interrupted when they realized what we were doing.

Later, as they're about to drop me off, we see that they've called in the "reinforcements" and there is Sarah Cody's car driving the opposite direction, filled with more girls.  They have stolen Jose's golf club from the bed of his truck (at this point, we had moved up to Eric's truck).

We follow them around campus, and stop in the University Baptist Church parking lot.  They get out, and find it wildly hilarious to stick maxi pads on Eric's windows.  I'm still waiting for the hilarious part.  Then Sarah drives off before Emily and Beth have a chance to get back in the car.  There's our chance.  I get out of the truck, and quickly catch up to the left behind girls, unsure of how to handle the situation.  Sarah stops her car and I run toward it, ready to open the back door.  No need.  Stacey opens it, expecting to see Emily or Beth running toward her.  Nope, it's Ian...and I jump into the car, then Jose does, and we finally get the golf club back.

All in all, an eventful night (cold, too).  Fold One is complete...

Jose...nabbed for HIS formal!

DATE:  November 26

SOURCE:  Jose

Yes, it may have taken awhile, but Jose got his date to HIS formal.  He's going with Heather Shaw (past Girl of the Week).  Rumor has it (the name of the game around here!) that Beth Sims will ask Thad Prugh to formal, so the list gets shorter, girls!

VIEWS:  Photos will be fun at formal, I'm sure.  Whahahaha...

Ian's Night in the E-Business Lab

DATE:  December 9-10

SOURCE:  me

Today, my huge database project was due at 11am.  Mitch, Tim, and I worked on it practically nonstop from 2 in the afternoon until 5:30 the next morning when we decided to call it quits, being nearly done.  Usually the lab closes at midnight, but apparently we had "special permission" or something.  A lot of rules were broken, such as the 'no food or drink' rule.  Around 3am, Nathan Winston leaves and comes back with a pillow, a blanket, a sleeping bag, and Shrek.  We popped the disc into the AV system and watched the flick on the three projection screens in the lab.  That had to be the highlight of the night, or maybe it was 5:45am as I walked in the door of Cockrell to find Geoff...still awake...on page 2 of his paper due that day.

Thanksgiving Break

DATE:  November 27-December 1

SOURCE: me

I got home to Flower Mound about 1pm last Wednesday.  Boredom quickly set in, about an hour after arrival, but I realized boredom was a precious feeling that I never experienced while at school, so I relished every second.  That night, I saw Rob, and we went in search of "athletic shorts".  They were, of course, found at Marshalls.  Thursday was Thanksgiving, so we did normal Voorn things like eat pizza dip for lunch, watch Miracle on 34th Street in the afternoon, and eat turkey for dinner.  Friday, Hans and I made a trip to CarMax to shop his car, but we left with the same one.  That evening, I stopped by Matt Skinner's house, then  saw Rob again, and Dan for a bit, but I hurried home because Jen was passing through on her way back to Fort Worth, so I insisted she stop in Flower Mound.  She got to meet most of the family (except for Adrienne), and we ate at Chili's, then took a tour of the town.  Saturday was lunch for Adrienne's birthday, then I went to Denton in the evening to see old camp buds.  Sunday - church - then I left for here.

VIEWS:  Like I said, I was bored a lot, but this was the first time I had a chance to slow down since like...August.  It was nice.

FM Connection

hello?  anyone from the old Flower Mound out there?

Others' School Schedules

DATE:  December 11

SOURCE:  Jared Bares

Jared IMs me on Wednesday, telling me how he's done with finals and already back at home in Flower Mound.  What the heck?  That was my last day of class, and at that point, I still had 2 study days, a weekend, then a whole week of finals left to go.  What are they thinking out there in Lubbock, and why isn't TCU thinking the same thing?

VIEWS:  I still have another week to waste away at school, but then again, how fun is Flower Mound anyway?  Am I really missing anything?

Kristy Coming to Fort Worth

DATE:  December 12

SOURCE:  Sarah Gibbs

(I'm not sure why Kristy falls under 'FM Connection'.  She's never been to Flower Mound, but she does associate with others from Flo-Town, such as Andrew, Rob, and Joe.)  Kristy is Sarah's best friend and will be coming to the HIS formal on Thursday as her date.  Can best friends be dates?  Only in the XX world.  I would never bring Andrew to BYX formal, and when he jokingly suggested it, it was still awkward, even in jest.  Moving on...Kristy last visited Fort Worth and TCU last May during finals week.  Seeing her in a party setting will be fun times, for sure.

Another Sighting!

DATE:  November 29

SOURCE:  me

LOCATION:  CarMax in Irving

Hans and I were perusing the cars in the CarMax lot (mostly Hondas of course) when I notice another man and his daughter looking at the nearby Toyotas.  On second glance, I recognize the girl as Lee Abshier!  Wow, talk about a blast from the past, I don't think I've spoken to her since 8th grade (she was never very talkative), but she did graduate from Marcus at the same time as me, and I'm not sure where she goes to college.  As you can tell, I didn't say hi.  I really didn't know what to say, so I just avoided any eye contact.  It got really uncomfortable when Hans and I were looking at this Saab convertible, and her dad was checking out the engine on the BMW next to us.  I held my ground and said nothing.

VIEWS:  Campbell's Soup...you know the rest.

Katie Sighting!

DATE:  November 24

SOURCE:  Rob

LOCATION:  church

DETAILS:  Sunday at church, Rob and Joe declared a Katie sighting!  It goes like this:  Joe turns to Rob during a quiet part of the mass and says, "to your left, one row up, is Andrew's old girlfriend Katie.  Hmmm...her friend is hot."  Rob replies, "I don't believe what I just saw!"  They didn't say hi to her, nor did she approach them.  Probably for the best, since Andrew and Katie left on probably the worst terms.  Their relationship bottomed out like WorldCom stock, in probably half the time.

VIEWS:  Only Rob could throw a Kirk Gibson reference into church.

Blue Honda...hijacked from 2816

DATE:  December 2

SOURCE:  Hans

It's a busy few weeks, with initiation, formal, plus bringing stuff home for Christmas break.  I decided I needed the blue Accord at school, so I hijacked it, much to the chagrin of Adrienne, who usually drives it to school.  She's taking it well, do you think she's learning the stick shift on the other car?  I seriously doubt it.
