What's REALLY happening on campus

STOP THE PRESSES, I HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE!
SOURCE: Ian
DATE: August 2
That’s right readers! After a nerve-racking July with dead-end leads, Dustin, Geoff, and I finally have a place to live for school this year. Luckily we didn’t have to resort to dorms, commuting, or tenting. We are renting a house very close to campus, just south of the bookstore on Cockrell Avenue. Move-in date is August 16, and there’s still plenty to buy before school begins, such as lamps, a dresser, a fridge (hmmm), and other such necessities.
VIEWS: many thanks to Hans, who really helped out with this, by acting as our intermediary with the leasing agent. I guess he was just as glad to find something for his son that doesn’t require a car. Haha.

Sheena missing?

ODDS SHE'LL MAKE IT ALIVE!: 3:2
For the first two months of summer, Sheena and I exchanged letters about summer goings-on, her at camp, and I in the hospital, and so on. When I returned from Vienna on July 6, I received an excellent letter from her complete with magic marker illustrations. I replied quickly, but I have yet to receive a return letter! I am quite distressed.
VIEWS: Maybe she floated away in the Central Texas floods…I knew I should have sent my message in a bottle. Or perhaps she’s just lethargic.
UPDATE: This didn’t make the first press date, but I caught her online. I think she’s at home now, and preparing to move to Lubbock.

Dustin has a new ride SOURCE: Dustin
DATE: mid July
My new roommate Dustin has purchased a red, convertible Mazda Miata. This is big news, because, not having a car at school, I may need to “borrow” it for “errands” and such. It’s a good thing he and Geoff are heaping praise on me for finding a house, because I’ll be calling in favors for the next nine months of school.

The Life of Ian

What's going on in MY life

Surgery Update SOURCE: the docs
DATE: late July
ODDS BRACES WILL BE OFF ON SCHEDULED DATE: 3:1
I think I am completely recovered. I ate chips and salsa for the first time in two months, and no pain in the jaw. Now that I can eat hard food, I’m pretty much back to normal. In other good news, I get my braces removed August 23. Dr. McFarland’s office was very cooperative with my desire to rid them from my mouth by the time school started. I didn’t see the doc last time, one of his lackeys was there instead, so I didn’t get a complete definitive decision, but there shouldn’t be a problem.

The Summer Trip to Austin (and San Marcos), Part I
SOURCE: Ian
DATES: July 20-21
ODDS I'LL GO BACK TO AUSTIN: 1:10!
On July 20-21, I flew to Austin trying to get to the Section Conclave that was going on. Stuart was running for Section Chief, and I wanted to be there for support. I got into Austin around 1:30, Dan picked me up at the airport, and we went to Guero’s for lunch. This restaurant is excellent. If you’re ever in Austin, check it out; it’s on South Congress, and has green salsa to die for. After a good meal, we went back to Dan’s apartment for some Trivial Pursuit, and I got to hear his revamped stereo system. His main goal for reconstruction was a better sound quality for vinyl, and let me tell you, it is something to hear. After that, we picked up Andrew, and the three of us rode to San Marcos to drop me off. In S.M., Stuart lost the election, but handled it well, better than Adam and I were. Then we ate lunch with his parents, and Adam and I drove back to DFW.

The Summer Trip to Bloomington, Indiana (Project: Crash NOAC)
SOURCE: Joe
DATES: July 26-28
ODDS WE'LL GO: 9:1
Joe and I (both lucky enough to be children of airline employees, therefore recipients of free flights) contemplated a trip to the National Order of the Arrow Conference, just to bum around and see what’s going on. Actually this trip didn’t happen. I felt finding a place to live was more important, so plans were scratched.

The Summer Trip to Austin, Part II
SOURCE: Ian, Andrew
DATES: August 2-4
ODDS I'LL GO AGAIN!: 5:1 by October, 3:1 by December
Joe talked of driving to Austin to see Andrew, and plus Laura and Erin were going to be in town. We ended up leaving at 10:30 Friday (August 2) night because Joe’s dad was out with his truck. We finally got on the road, and got to Austin around 2:00 in the morning. We had a good time, checking out all the great Austin sites, and left on Sunday. Oh yes, and I met the illustrious Lauren as well. She’s great! And she clued me in on show dates for Mamma Mia.

grin and bear it, Ian, you'll be back in Fort Worth in two weeks...

[High and Elementary] School Starting
SOURCE: Lewisville ISD calendar
DATES: August 12, i think.
Next week school begins for Adrienne and Evan. Evan will be in fifth grade at Old Settlers Elementary, and Adrienne is going to be a senior at Flower Mound High School, a member of the second-ever graduating class. They finished the auditorium at her school, a move that I commend, for putting the arts ahead of a football stadium. The Rumor Mill will keep you updated on her college search. From my POV, front-runners are Baylor and Southwest Texas.
