Concert Weekend

DATE:  April 25-27

This weekend could definitely be dubbed Live Music Fest 2003.  I saw 8 musical acts on Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday was Island Party.  Featured performers were Mark Philpot, Heather Morgan, and 40 Days.  Then, Saturday night, I went to the Fort Worth Main Street Arts Festival.  Bowling For Soup played a free gig at 10pm.  Sunday was the real show - Mingo Fishtrap.  This has been anticipated for quite some time.  Evan, Hans, and his best friend Larry came to Fort Worth to see this band (true road fans).  I also saw Peach Truck Republic (eh), Free the Leaf (original, good sound), and Flickerstick (flickerstunk) on Sunday, at TCU's "block party."

REVIEW:  Mingo Fishtrap.  I've heard of this band mainly from my dad and Larry, who are big Tower of Power fans.  Mingo has a similar sound, as their slogan goes, "solinphestedfonkmuzik."  The band is 8 members, a lead guitar/vocalist, keyboards, drums, bass, trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, and bari sax.  The vocalist/guitarist is the son of the bassist, which is quite unusual.  About half of the band are in their 20s, while the other half are pushing 50.  A true band that spans generations.  Mingo is truly meant to be seen live.  Until now, I had only heard their CDs, but live...wow.  The horn section dances when they don't play, there are solos a-plenty, and the band interacts with the audience well.  I told everyone I saw to come check them out, but only Jane and Becky cared enough to show.  Jane has actually heard of the band, since she's from Austin, and she was definitely anticipating this great show.  She also taught me how to eat crawfish.

Wedding Invitation

DATE:  April 21

I learned a lesson: take an engaged woman on a date, and you'll get invited to her wedding.  Genna Leal, who was my formal date last December (with permission from fiance Dustin) invited me to her hitchin' set to take place in May.

Lead Story - SAN ANTONIO

Island Party 2003

DATE:  April 26

LOCATION:  Carlson Elementary School (at Stadium Drive & Cantey Street)

WHEN:  2pm - 8pm

The 15th annual Brothers Under Christ Island Party is this weekend!  It's a free, all-campus party hosted by BYX that has great bands (40 Days, Heather Morgan, Mark Philpot), free food, and a lot of fun in the sun.  If you're in or around Fort Worth on that day - you should be at Island Party!

Jen & Camille - Run In with the Law!

DATE:  April 21

LOCATION:  Palmer, Texas

Jen calls me immediately after their run-in with the cops on I-45, between Ennis and Ferris.  She was pulled over for "changing lanes too quickly."  The cop had the girls get out of the car and he searched it for drugs or something.  Of course the girls were perfectly sane and sober, especially at 10am on a Monday.  The cop explains that in most cases of a car changing lanes too quickly, it's carrying drugs, alcohol, or weapons.  Jen carried none of these in her blue Escort.  The cop let them off.  Sure was a close one.

Campout at the Walker Ranch

DATE:  April 11-13

LOCATION:  west of Mineral Wells, Texas on the mighty Brazos River

The family of Andy and Cici Walker have a ranch just west of Mineral Wells, on the beautiful Brazos.  This weekend, they planned a campout for friends to lay back and take a load off for awhile.  It was a great time to relax.  I did not spend the night out there, just went for the day on Saturday.  I was there to watch a great mud fight, some frisbee golf, and kicking back.  I rode to the ranch with Ben Kizer.  The drive is the same as the route to Worth Ranch, so I pointed out all the Mineral Wells landmarks, like Woody's, the Baker Hotel, the Laumdronat, and the Diamond Supermarket with the hot pharmacy girl.

Cici was really looking forward to this mud fight.  She's a real country girl we decided, and not afraid to get dirty.  Well, it took about 30 seconds before everyone was covered in mud.  I took a lot of action shots, but the camera chose not to save them, so I'm waiting on Crenshaw's pictures to come in.  After the fight, everyone went to bathe in the river.  Let's see...in the photo, it looks like (L-R) John, Cici, Woody, Shannon, Case, Matt Loo, and Tim.

John and I left with Ben Kizer around 8:30.  Geoff was truly crazy - he went out Friday night, didn't sleep at all, came home at 9am, slept on the couch, then came back to the ranch around 7 to spend Saturday night there.

Friday Concert

DATE:  April 11

LOCATION:  Billy Bob's

Friday was my first time at Bob's on a non-Thursday, and it was really crowded for the Cross Canadian Ragweed concert.  I like to take the credit that I convinced Jen to come, and Alison too.  First we went to Purple Cow for some free milkshakes, then to Starbucks to see Camille at work.  I even helped her bring in the patio tables.  The concert itself was really good.  Ragweed plays a rock-country mix that sounds a lot like Little Feat.  A very good show, I'd see them again.

Conclusion to Frats-at-Bat

DATE:  April 13

LOCATION:  intramural fields

Rain washed out the actual tournament (read about it in the March issue), so we concluded today.  Our first two games were victories, against Sig Ep and the golf team.  After that, there were four teams left:  Lambda Chi 2 (winners bracket, weak side), Lambda Chi 1 (winners bracket, strong side), Phi Kap (losers bracket), and BYX (losers bracket).  We were playing with a short squad, missing Monty (ss), Mike (3b), and Paul (of), three good hitters.  The final score was 5-1, with a true lack of offense on our part.  It was a tough loss - we hadn't really practiced in over a week.  4th place out of 22 teams, overall, not bad.  Tournament record:  5-2.

INTRAMURAL UPDATE.  On a happy note, we did clean up our division in intramural softball, going 4-0.  Tournament's next.

Rumor:  Sheena...what's she up to?

DATE:  April 4-April 13

I don't see Sheena on a regular basis, so often I get updates on her via her away messages.  Well, lately she has spent a lot of time with Mr. Gabe Perez.  Gabe is a Son of Voorn and a very quirky, funny guy.  The two met during Fleet Week, I mean, the HIS party.  I say that because Gabe was dressed as a sailor.  Their activities this weekend have included dinner, movie, concert at Four Star, and meeting Gabe's parents.  Now this may sound like "dating" to you, but let's not jump to conclusions.  Remember, I had a similar relationship last spring that included meeting parents, dinners, shows, but we never dated.  So nothing's carved in stone.

Picture: Gabe's the little Mexican on the right

VIEWS:  Props to Blake, for seeing that the two met.  The cynical attitude both have make for interesting conversations, I'm sure.

Andy & Alex Visit Fort Worth

DATE:  April 3-6

FROM:  Oxford, Ohio and Lexington, Kentuckah

(PIcture:  Andy, Geoff, and Alex)

Geoff had been anticipating this visit for several months now.  He met Andy and Alex on the summer project he went on to Daytona, Florida.  Andy is from Detroit and attends Miami University (of Ohio).  Alex is from Chicago and attends the University of Kentucky.  They set out for the 15 hour drive Thursday afternoon and arrived in Fort Worth around 3am early Friday morning.

Friday, they came to campus and checked that out.  This included yelling at me from Geoff's car while I was giving a tour.  No sweat, that's the best part of tours.  That night, they came along on a BYX event to play broomball against the UNT chapter of BYX.  That was plenty fun.  I don't do well on ice, but did great as the manager of my team.  First pick:  Troy Williams, experienced on ice, from Minneapolis.  Mike Moore checked my hand into the wall, that wasn't so fun.

Saturday morning was the BYX cell group ultimate tournament.  Ian's cell group went 1-2 before being eliminated...by Geoff's cell group.  Geoff & Co went on to the final game, where they lost.  Later that day, Alex drove to Dallas to see Dave Barnes play, and in the process, got into an accident on I-35.  He wasn't hurt, but the catch was, it's Andy's car.  Everyone was cool, no problems at all, praise the Lord.  Saturday night was mostly spent at Cockrell, mourning the Longhorns' loss to Syracuse and playing dominoes.

All in all, a great weekend.  Andy and Alex were good men, very friendly, and I think they enjoyed being pseudo-BYX guys for the weekend.  And the car...well, it can be fixed.

Jay's 22nd Birthday

DATE:  April 6

LOCATION:  The Ballpark in Arlington

ATTENDEES:  Jay, Jose, Dietz, Billy, Bear, me

Jay, who is about to graduate in May, recently got a full-time job with Morgan Stanley, where he's been an intern for about a year now.  Congrats Jay, Morgan Stanley is the big time.  They have their DFW offices in the Ballpark office suites in center field.  For his birthday, Jay got to use the stadium suite that overlooks the field.  The view was good...we could watch kids do wiffle ball home run derby right below us, and catch the real game too.  The view was partially obstructed by the CF pavilion, so we hopped the gate and moved over two suites to sit on their balcony.  Later we found out it was Jeff Moorad's office, the sports agent who represents Ivan Rodriguez, among others.  Very ritzy.

Matt Rav's 22nd Birthday

DATE:  April 3

LOCATION:  Odessa backyard

In celebration of Matt Ravanesi's 22nd birthday, he threw a concert in his backyard.  The artist, Dave Barnes, an acoustic guitarist from Nashville, was in town and had some sort of Rav connection.  He played a good set, a mellow sound a lot like Jack Johnson.  The highlight was his monster ballad medley.  Very quality.

I arrived around 8:00, to see Matt talking to a woman delivering a singing telegram, courtesy of his parents.  The woman was really odd, that was not the sort of thing I expected to see walking into the backyard.  At that point, the party attendants were few:  Derek, Thad, Eric, Blake, and Matt's sister Anne.

Opening Night party

DATE:  March 30

LOCATION:  next door

Ashley, my next door neighbor, BYX guy, and consummate baseball fan, planned an Opening Night party to watch Baseball Tonight season preview and of course, the first game of the season, World Champion Anaheim Angels and the Texas Rangers.  I was a little hesitant about a party like this next door.  John and Tim, Ashley's roommates, are not true baseball fans.  I didn't want to spend the evening explaining things like defensive indifference and dropped third strikes.  'Tis no matter, Ashley truly planned his party well, having hot dogs grilling out front and engaging in stimulating baseball conversation.  The Angels lost, but it was still a good evening.

VIEWS:  In the Dallas Morning News yesterday, Tim Cowlishaw picked the Dodgers to win the World Series.  I'm not the only believer...

Date Dash!

DATE:  March 27

LOCATION:  Rollerland West (right next to Rollerland East)

Okay, last year as an officer, I could plan ahead and get a date for Date Dash, since I knew it was coming.  Not this year!  I experienced the true spirit of the "dash" in finding a date.  Luckily I wasn't turned down anywhere, the first girl I went to was available.  That girl - Katie "Boggy" Boggs - is an expert roller skater, which complemented my ineptitude well.  I spent many a birthday party frustrated at my lack of balance on wheels.  That's behind me now.  Katie was a good teacher and she helped me out a lot.  I only fell twice, and they weren't all-out spills.  I anticipated the fall and took a knee rather than land on my butt.  Katie retired from skating early after she developed a blister or something on her ankle which impeded her skating ability.  I then went at it on my own ( ! ) and did rather well.

The Pre-Date Dash Dinner Party

DATE:  March 27

LOCATION:  Cockrell House

What began as a dinner date for Geoff and Meredith turned into a dinner party including Geoff, Meredith, Cici, Erin, and Matt Loo.  I showed up toward the tail end of it, but just in time for cake.  The girls made spaghetti and cake and the boys provided scintillating dinner conversation.  The girls also provided the entertainment when they started the frosting fight.

Matt Loo left and returned, looking for a Mr. Godley and Ms. Baker, whom he was to chauffeur to the roller rink that evening.

Life & Times of Ian

and what a life it is.

Last Week at School

DATE:  April 21-25

LOCATION:  mainly the e-business lab

Man, last week was killer...let's review:

Monday: ASP test, finish telecom project, prepare presentation, and oh yeah, celebrate birthday

Tuesday:  telecom presentation, study for accounting

    Wednesday:  accounting exam, film critique

    Thursday:  health project due

    Friday:  website project due

I was drained.  But luckily the weekend was relaxing and this week is not so bad.

21st Birthday:  A Look Back

DATE:  April 19-21

LOCATION:  Benigans, parents' house, Cockrell House, Marble Slab, e-business lab

So I turned 21 on Monday.  The birthday celebration began on Saturday, when the Voorns went out to eat.  Since Adrienne was at work, we had to go on her break, leaving us with limited options, but Benigans was appropriate.  Sunday, I got gifts from my parents (including a new fitted Dodgers cap).  Pam made me a cake, shaped like an Easter bunny so it could count for two special days.

On my actual birthday, I had to awake an exam in E-Business class.  That wasn't so fun, but Becky did buy me lunch (on her meal card).  I spent most of the afternoon studying and working on the telecom project/presentation due the 22nd.  I took a break from 7:30 to 8:30 for a "celebration of Voorndom" at Marble Slab.  Geoff, Dustin, Scott, Mike, Ben, Bear, Jen, and Camille all attended.  Jen even bought me ice cream.  Later that night, with the assistance of Tim, Matt Loo, Meredith, and Cici, I got "trashed, hammered, and toasted."  As Matt held the hammer, I was glad he didn't act out "smashed."  I was standing in front of my computer.

VIEWS:  Jen's first words to me were "wow, Ian, you even LOOK older."  I'll remind her not to say that to her mother on her birthday.

Birthday 2003:  "21 on 21"

DATE:  April 21

A recent exchange between Rob and I:

Ian:  "You know what sucks?  Having your 21st birthday on a Monday."

Rob:  "Yeah?  Trying having your 21st birthday on Easter."

Touche, Rob.  It makes it easy if you gave up alcohol for Lent.  Anyway, so my birthday is in a week, but it comes at a very inconvenient time.  I have a test that day, a project presentation the next day, and another test on Wednesday.  I can't foresee any celebrations, too bad.

Intent to Graduate Form?!?!?

DATE:  March 27

Before I could be advised, I had to fill out an "intent to graduate form."  Intent??!?!  Sure, I intend to, but not for another year.  Don't rush me, Neeley school, I'm not ready to leave yet!  Even after I filled out the form, I still couldn't get advised.  Neeley "Resource" Center, my foot.  Can anyone get an appointment there?  Last year, I thought it was because all the seniors had priority.  Well, I'm a senior by hours now, and still nothing.  Bah.

Internship

DATE:  April 1

As a part of my E-Business degree plan, I have to get a summer internship.  Well, I don't have much time, and I still have nothing.  Luckily, I'm not alone.  Only about 5 of the 36 E-Bus majors have a job, so I'm right on target.  If you are a company looking for a professional e-business/telecom/networking/databasing internship, email me at i.k.voorn@tcu.edu.

Rob's Birthday

DATE:  April 20

LOCATION:  Austin

Rob stayed in Austin for the Easter weekend, so all celebrations relating to Rob's 21st birthday (day before mine) happened down south.  He was given an excellent gift from Dan and others - www.lobsterbush.com.  It's impressive, check it out.

Austin News...from beat reporter Rob Harvey

DATE:  April 6

LOCATION(S):  Austin, Round Rock

Rob, Andrew, and Tommy go to Round Rock Express opening night on Thursday 4/3 to surprise Dan. Dan makes numerous Dan Grimes moments throughout the night. His beer box was leaking cold water down his right leg. After finishing in the 8th inning, he joined us carrying nachos. But, he had already spilled nacho cheese all over his crotch in transit.

Ladies and Gentlemen....Dan Grimes.

In a related Round Rock story, the four of us were sitting in the grass in left field in the bottom of the 8th and suddenly a little black boy around the age of 8 slides next to Andrew and sits down. He points at Dan and says, "That guy is funny." And begins laughing hysterically on his back. Rob, caught up in the moment, also laughs uncontrollably on his back.

Ladies and Gentlemen....the spectacle that is Dan Grimes.

Real League leaders, Week 1

DATE:  March 31 - April 5

In order...Eric, Tommy, Andrew, Scott, Rob

Austin Trip

DATE:  March 28-30

LOCATION:  Austin

Yes, I visited Andrew, Rob, Dan, Lauren, and Kristy not 2 months ago, but I was invited back when Dan offered me a ticket to the Statesman Series, an MLB exhibition game featuring the Rockies and Royals at the Dell Diamond minor league park.  The game was great.  The weather was slightly colder than expected, but the sky was clear and the game exciting.  The climax came when we were made "Whataburger Fans of the Game."  The sports marketing girl, Jill Perdue, picked Dan to be the fan.  He started to explain that he was a stadium employee, but I hushed him before she could take away the glory.  Howard came over (read about Howard down below) and exposed Dan, but Rob was quickly brought in to be a replacement.  Rob was somewhat less drunk than Dan (okay, not drunk at all) but he would have to do.  Jill confirmed to us later that her job pretty much consists of finding the loudest, drunkest fan and giving him a Whataburger sign to hold.  What a job.

VIEWS:  Rob later was quoted as saying, "that's the smallest Jumbotron I've ever been on."  He was rewarded with two free burgers.

(at left) Rob marveling at his luck

Dan Grimes:  Beerman

DATE:  March 28

LOCATION:  Dell Diamond, Round Rock, Texas

Dan got a job as a beerman for the Round Rock Express minor league baseball team.  After his rookie game (the Rockies/Royals exhibition Friday night) he came over to Rob's apartment to explain how this is the best job ever created.  Already after one game, Dan has a selling rhythm and a nemesis.  The nemesis:  a man named Howard, who pulls "beer tenure" on Dan.  Howard sold beer at the Houston Astrodome, where his signature yell was "Coldest foam in the dome!"  Howard claims territory to sections 114-118, and there are fans that will only buy beer from Howard.  Dan will gain his own following by at least midseason, I guarantee.

GM Steakhouse - Not Closing After All

DATE:  March 29

LOCATION:  GM Steakhouse, Lamar Street in Austin across from the Whole Foods corporate office

About a month ago, Dan was distraught over the supposed closing of GM Steakhouse.  Those corporate fat cats were going to raze the restaurant and build a yuppie condo/retail complex on its site.  GM is a historical landmark (well, nearly) in Austin, being the "official restaurant of the Texas Senate".  It's run by an old Greek man named Gus, who cooks the world's greatest breakfast tacos right on the griddle in front of you.

Well, Saturday night around 1:00, Dan, Rob, and I went to GM.  Dan knows Gus very well, and they had a brief conversation, where Gus assured Dan that GM wasn't closing permanently.  The building will be torn down, yes, but on the ground floor of the new retail complex, GM will return in all its greatness.

Rob & Lauren - Coming to DFW?

DATE:  April 5-6

LOCATION:  Fort Worth, Canton First Monday

ODDS:  6:1

We don't have rumors that often anymore, but here's a good one:  Rob wants to go flea market shopping at Canton First Monday, and Lauren may come along because she's never visited TCU.  Rob has a good feeling about this month's Canton deals:  last month, it was snowed out, and it's spring cleaning time, which means more stuff.  He only shops for Nintendo games anyway.  I pegged the odds at 6:1 because it is a week away, a lot of stuff could pop up, and Lauren is a big question mark, too.

The Homefront

news about Hans, Pam, Adrienne, or Evan

Easter

DATE:  April 18-20

I went back to Flower Mound for the Easter weekend.  I got to do some cool stuff, like get my hair cut, see Evan play soccer, shop with Pam, and dye 5 Easter eggs.  We went to our church, Vista Ridge Methodist, Easter morning and saw more people I hadn't seen in awhile.  We had Easter lunch, went for a drive around FM, and had Heather over for dinner.  Now, when Heather came to me last week looking for a pickup from DFW, it sounded like she had exhausted all options.  But no, Geoff Godley himself was there, picking up Ben Kizer, who was on the same flight as Heather, coming back from Omaha.  I'm glad Heather did all her research...

VIEWS:  'Tis no matter.  Heather got to meet the crazy Voorn family, have dinner (not a fish fry), and experience the excitement of Flower Mound and Lake Breeze Lane.  We'll do it again sometime, perhaps.

Hans - 25 years at American

DATE:  April 10, 2003

Hans has had a long, mostly successful run with American Airlines.  He first started working there for several reasons:  A.)  his rock 'n roll career wasn't going far, and he needed a real job before he got married, and B.) he thought the benefits would be useful.  And have they ever.  The Voorns have moved twice due to his job with AMR, to Cary, North Carolina, and then to Flower Mound, Texas.  Now a 25-year vet, Hans currently works at AMR Headquarters in Irving, Texas.  With his flight benefits, we've taken trips to Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Britain, France, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, and numerous domestic vacations.

VIEWS:  Here's to another 25 years, or more like 10 before he retires.

Hans and Pam's anniversary

DATE:  March 31

BY THE NUMBERS:  24 years, 3 kids, 3 states, numerous vacations and bad jokes

Hans and Pam celebrate their 24th wedding anniversary on March 31.  That's a long time, but they've still got another couple years before they pass that point where over half of their lives have been spent as a married couple.  That's gotta be something.
